YVES SAINT LAURENT: STYLE IS ETERNAL

Take a sneak peek into Yves Saint Laurent’s studio as the first YSL exhibition ever is to be held in UK this summer. The Bowes Museum and the Foundation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent – which is headed up by Pierre Bergé, the designer’s partner – have collaborated to bring the retrospective, entitled Yves Saint Laurent: Style is Eternal to Britain. The exhibition will run from July 11th to October 25th and will be held at Bowes Museum, a stunning castle near Newcastle in England. Not only will their be props from his studio, also his sketches will be available to the public eye. And for those who can't make it to London you can still shop these vintage pieces.

A BROOCH IS NOT A THING OF THE PAST

We understand that for many women wearing a brooch is a thing of the past, memories of your grandma or Madeleine Albright might scare you away from owning a brooch or pin. But do not be afraid. There are other ways to wear a brooch other than pinned on your lapel. Wear them to fasten your scarf, use it as a hair pin, or pile them up on your favorite chunky sweater. These amazing vintage pieces from Chanel would look striking together on a fitted wool dress or use the pin as a closure to a cardigan or low cut blouse. The Lacroix heart and cross should be fastened on your favorite hat and not only on Christmas!

#GALLIANOGLORY

John Galliano has returned on the fashion scene with an exciting collection for Margiela debuted the other day in London. The master is back indeed. We have always loved those barely there bias-cut dresses like this one from early 2000's from his namesake label. Even though Galliano's favorite inspirations came especially form the 20's European fallen aristocrats or the broke and forgotten 40's Hollywood actresses,  a bias-cut Galliano gown will never go out of fashion and is always defiantly sexy. The cut out sleeves with a medieval point are held together by custom buttons in silver lame, one of Galliano's favorite accent. Welcome back Mr. Galliano!!

THE SIXTIES ALWAYS SWING BACK OUR WAY

The sixties were back in a big way in 2014 as proof that fashion goes in circles. But as we have said before in this blog we at Decades are firm believers that the originals are the best investments. Such is the case with these two Courreges pieces form the 60's. The wool vest in navy with the gold buttons and peter pan collar can be worn with the a-line pleated skirt in red for a more retro look or it can be worn with flared or boot cut jeans for a more relaxed look. Both these pieces are in perfect condition and that is a testament that good fashion never gets old.

HIPPIE CHIC AND 70'S EXTRAVAGANZA

"Before globalization became a cliché, Thea Porter dressed Elizabeth Taylor for the souk, put the socialite Dalitha Getty in caftans and created Symbolist-inspired costumes for a perpetual party centered on the Rolling Stones and their newly made friends from the British aristocracy. Her specialty was in finding exceptional fabrics -- Swiss chiffons, Indian handprints, 1930's French voiles uncovered in warehouses -- and deploying them voluminously for a clientele undaunted by the extravagance of both her silhouettes and her fees. A gypsy costume Ms. Porter made for Begum Aga Khan to wear to a fancy dress ball given by Baron Alexis de Rede was lavish enough that her fellow Briton, the designer Hardy Amies, described it as ''pre-guillotine.'' This is how Ms. Porter clothes were mentioned in The New York Times.  This psychedelic burnout chiffon wrap around dress with velvet trim and matching bag is an extraordinary piece to be worn every time you want to feel decadent and shamelessly exotic.

THE BUSINESS OF LUXURY

In the past decades luxury has become more and more sought after. It is not only the ultra wealthy indulging in luxury goods, everyone these days must have a Chanel bag and dreams of their first Birkin. As it goes with the resale business chances are, with certain pieces like Hermes, you can look at the purchase as an investment. Especially with a perfect looking Birkin in croc matte finish like this one. There is something to be said about luxury, it is not what most need, it is what they want, and that pulls at the heart.
